Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) is a compulsory education stage aimed at the development of the basic skills, to the acquisition of which both primary and compulsory secondary education must contribute.  Having achieved the core competencies and objectives of this stage, the student obtains the Lower Compulsory Secondary Education Certificate.

People older than 18 years who have not got this title but wish to obtain one can attend courses offered by the Centres for Continuing Adult Education  or take advantage of a distance-study program at the Open Institute of Catalonia (l'Institut Obert de Catalunya).

These programmes enable them to achieve the necessary professional competence, as well as to enhance their basic skills in order to continue their education, improve their vocational and employment opportunities, allowing access to Intermediate Vocational Training or a Baccalaureate certificate.
